Welcome to the website of "CROPS": "The Campaign for the Reinvigoration of the Probation Service".
We three retired Probation Officers, having spent our working lives helping offenders so that they do not offend again, are appalled at the dramatic increase in the numbers of people imprisoned in this country, from 45,000 in 1992 to 82,000 in 2009.
We are disgusted at the government's bland acceptance of their civil servants' estimate that this prison population will rise to about 95,000 by 2014, and by its plans to build if not "Titan" prisons, then even more expensive "mini-Titan" prisons.
We know from our own experience of the probation and prison services, and by our ongoing contacts with Probation Officers, that this rise in the prison population is brutal, inhumane, highly expensive for the tax-payer, and quite unnecessary.
We know what needs to be done to reduce the prison population, and still "protect the public" properly and reduce re-offending.
So we have set up this campaign, and invite you to join us.
